Spring is here in Northwest Indiana, and that means warmer days are right around the corner. Before you flip that thermostat from heat to cool, take a few minutes to make sure your air conditioning system is ready to perform all summer long.
At Sub-Cooled Heating and Air Conditioning, we see the same preventable problems every spring — and most of them can be avoided with a little preparation. Here’s your checklist.

1. Replace Your Air Filter
This is the easiest and most overlooked step. A dirty filter restricts airflow, makes your system work harder, and drives up your energy bills. If you haven’t changed it since fall, it’s overdue.
Pro tip: Hold your filter up to a light. If you can’t see through it, replace it immediately.
2. Clear Debris Around Your Outdoor Unit
Over the winter, leaves, branches, and dirt accumulate around your condenser unit. Clear at least 2 feet of space on all sides to ensure proper airflow. You can gently rinse the coils with a garden hose — but never use a pressure washer.

3. Check Your Thermostat
Switch your thermostat to cooling mode and set it a few degrees below room temperature. You should hear the system kick on within a minute or two. If nothing happens, check the batteries (if applicable) or make sure the breaker hasn’t tripped.
Upgrade tip: If you’re still using a manual thermostat, a programmable or smart thermostat can save you 10-15% on cooling costs every summer.

4. Inspect Your Vents and Registers
Walk through your home and make sure all supply and return vents are open and unobstructed. Furniture, rugs, and curtains can block airflow without you realizing it. Blocked vents create pressure imbalances that make your system work harder and cool unevenly.
5. Listen for Unusual Noises
When you first turn on your AC, listen carefully. Grinding, squealing, or banging sounds are red flags that something needs attention. Catching these early can prevent a breakdown on the hottest day of the year.
Common culprits:
- Squealing: Worn belt or motor bearing
- Banging: Loose or broken component
- Clicking: Electrical issue or failing capacitor
- Hissing: Possible refrigerant leak
6. Check Your Condensate Drain Line
Your AC removes humidity from the air, and that moisture drains through a condensate line. Over time, algae and debris can clog this line, causing water backup and potential water damage. Pour a cup of white vinegar down the drain line to keep it clear.
7. Schedule a Professional Tune-Up
The most important thing you can do is schedule a professional maintenance visit before the summer rush. A trained technician will:
- Check refrigerant levels
- Clean the evaporator and condenser coils
- Test electrical connections
- Inspect the blower motor and fan
- Verify thermostat calibration
- Check for potential safety issues
Regular maintenance extends the life of your system, improves efficiency, and catches small problems before they become expensive repairs.
